Habitats
The rivers, streams and estuaries are home to an abundance of native fish and insects, while towering totara trees are home to birdlife and pekapeka (native long-tailed bats). Found on the forest floors of Te Hoiere are creatures such as the velvet worm and giant Powelliphanta snail. But these native habitats are also shared by introduced, invasive species threatening our native flora and fauna, such as rats, stoats and possums.
Protecting waterways with riparian planting
