Students in the catchment enjoyed another learning opportunity connecting with nature thanks to Sarah Huntley, education coordinator for Te Hoiere Project. Sarah teamed up with Tasman Bay Guardians to offer senior students from Havelock and Linkwater schools an unforgettable experience learning about our local freshwater.
Many students snorkelled down the river and spent time on the banks seeing what creatures they could find. Some students also worked with a Stream Health Monitoring and Assessment Kit (SHMAK), which was developed by Earth Sciences New Zealand in partnership with Federated Farmers to examine stream health. Students used the kits to look at water temperature and clarity, while also finding macroinvertebrates, tuna, and cockabullies throughout the day.
