Te Hoiere/Pelorus River catchment is one of Marlborough’s most ecologically and culturally significant landscapes. Impacted by declining water quality and biodiversity loss, the catchment has become a focal point for restoration through Te Hoiere Project —a catchment also identified under Department of Conservation’s Nga Awa River Restoration Programme and Ministry for the Environment’s At Risk Catchments Programme.
Launched in 2020, Te Hoiere Project brings together the aspirations of the community, iwi, industry, NGOs, Marlborough District Council and Government agencies to restore the mauri of the catchment. The project takes a holistic approach, integrating mātauranga Māori, science and community action.
Te Hoiere Project is governed by Te Hoiere Kaitiaki Charitable Trust, with trustees providing leadership and guidance towards implementing the Integrated Catchment Enhancement Plan.
The Trust is seeking expressions of interest from residents of Te Hoiere/Pelorus for a Community Trustee (Rai Valley, Ronga Valley, Tunakino Valley, Opouri Valley, Whakamarino, Havelock, Pelorus Sound, Kaituna and Linkwater).
The Trustee will ideally have an interest in the environment, farming and/or forestry. Governance experience is desirable; however, training will be provided. As a Trustee, you will be part of the governance group having direct input into the strategy of the project going forward.
This role requires someone with:
- An ability to see the bigger picture and make balanced decisions on behalf of all stakeholders.
- An ability to deliver financial stewardship to the project.
- Knowledge of working with government departments.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and must be a team player.
- An appreciation of Te Ao Māori (Māori world view).
- A willingness to learn.
- Time to commit to at least one Governance meeting every 6 weeks (currently Thursday afternoons), plus associated tasks.
This is a voluntary role for a 3-year term.
